Walter T. Marlowe, P.E., CAE, Selected as CSI's

New Executive Director and CEO

Walter T. Marlowe, P.E., CAE, has been selected as the new Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of CSI. A Search Task Team of respected CSI members, led by Ross Spiegel, FCSI, CCS, CCCA, AIA, LEED AP, worked closely with Korn/Ferry International to develop the specifications for the kind of executive to lead CSI forward. CSI President, Edd Soenke said, “It was an inspiring process, and I know we have the right person for the job. Walt is a perfect fit and his engineering background will serve CSI well.” The CSI Board of Directors made its selection during its November 2006 Board Meeting in Denver, Colorado following a nationwide search by Korn/Ferry.

Marlowe has 16 years experience and demonstrated increasing responsibility in association management. He served in a variety of staff leadership roles at the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE). His positions included Director of Professional Practice, International Activities and Technical Activities.

Prior to joining CSI, Marlowe was the Executive Director of Building Security Council (BSC). Led by the ASCE Architectural Engineering Institute, BSC focuses on improving public safety by advancing building security. BSC administers and maintains a voluntary rating system that enables building owners to evaluate and improve the security of their facilities.

Asked why he was drawn to the opportunity of helming CSI, Marlowe stated, “There is such potential for members, staff and CSI partners to build a truly collaborative, growing and innovative organization.  The mission of CSI is increasingly important as the construction industry becomes more multi-disciplinary, interdependent, and technology driven.”

A licensed professional engineer in New Jersey, Marlowe practiced structural engineering earlier in his career with the consulting firms DeLeuw, Cather & Co. and The RBA Group.

Marlowe is an alumnus of Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, NJ where he earned a Bachelor of Engineering degree. Challenge to Chapters: Invitation for PageFormat Input

CSI and CSC (Construction Specifications Canada) are in the final phases of updating SectionFormat and PageFormat. This process will coordinate SectionFormat and PageFormat with the recently updated MasterFormat 04 and the PRM/MOP.

PageFormat is currently under development with the first draft expected in early February 2007. Prior to that release, SPUTT (SectionFormat™/ PageFormat™ Update Task Team) invites Region Technical Chairs to establish opportunities for Chapters in their regions to participate in testing the initial concepts of PageFormat. What would you like to see incorporated into PageFormat?

The committee has prepared a graphic diagram for PageFormat. Using the guidelines illustrated in the diagram, chapters are challenged to submit one or more presentation styles of a typical section illustrating how to maximize the readability of a section. The submission should include a description of why the proposed features are improve readability. The Task Team would like to receive submissions as soon as practical, but no later than March 15, 2007.

Also, SectionFormat Draft 3 is now posted at www.CSINet.org/sputt/. It contains an application guide, an outline of article titles, a comprehensive commentary, and some examples of the flexibility and options available.

As an additional opportunity for a Chapter technical activity, Chapters can prepare sample sections using the proposed article titles in SectionFormat Draft 3 to test its strengths and weaknesses when written for a variety of products and systems. Of special interest to the Task Team is the application of SectionFormat to the engineering, process, and the transportation industries. Where problems are encountered, they should be described with suggestions for improving the SectionFormat list of articles.

Questions regarding this process can be sent via email to the Task Team at atitus@csinet.org.

Submissions should be sent to the Task Team in the form of electronic files (Microsoft word processing formats are preferred) transmitted by email, with a subject line reading “SectionFormat/PageFormat Sample Documents,” to the CSI SectionFormat/PageFormat Update Task Team Staff Liaison, Aaron Titus, at atitus@csinet.org, or by fax at (703) 236-4650.

As the responses are received, the Task Team will evaluate them on a regular basis during the review period.

We look forward to receiving your submissions.

Respectfully yours,
David Lorenzini, FCSI, CCS, SCIP
SectionFormat/ PageFormat Update Task Team Chairman
