CSI Webinar – Submittals and Substitutions, Tuesday, November 6, 2007 2:00 - 3:30 pm (EDT), Greg Markling, FCSI, CCS, CCCA, AIA, MOA Architectural Partnership
Description: The submittal process prior to and during construction is critical to the ultimate success of any project. Often, submittals are used by architects, contractors, and material suppliers for a wide variety of purposes, few of which are consistent with the intent of their use as stipulated in the Contract Documents. It is of utmost importance that all members of the design and construction team clearly understand the purpose and intent of submittals in the construction process. In addition, from the product representative’s perspective, there is nothing more frustrating that to “get specified” only to lose the project to a competitor; from the Contractor’s perspective, there is great pressure to “buy out” the project for the lowest dollar possible; from the design professional/specifiers perspective, there is a compelling desire to specify the right products and actually “get what was specified.” How
can all members of the design and construction team get what they want out of this process, and still serve the Owner who is paying for the project in the first place? In this session, you will gain a better understanding of the contractual issues and practical challenges regarding submittals and substitutions in the construction industry, and become better equipped to properly participate in this critical process as a member of the construction team.
Learning Objectives:
- Learn the contractual responsibilities of the Contractor, Design Professional/Specifier, and Product Representative regarding submittals and substitutions.
- Understand the proper procedures for making construction phase submittals, and requesting and securing substitutions.
- Learn the benefits and potential pitfalls of submittals and substitutions on the end-product of the construction process.
